In Memoriam:

It is with great sadness that ORI mourns the loss of Senior Scientist Charles W. Turner, who passed away on Friday, August 21, 2020. Charles was a highly valued, highly regarded, and beloved member of our ORI family, and he will be deeply missed. Charles joined ORI in 2002 after retiring from the faculty of the University of Utah (1970-2003), and was a Scientist here for 18 years. As an ORIer, Charles served as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on at least nine different research grants on the treatment and prevention of substance abuse and other serious problem behaviors in adolescents and young adults, with particular focus on analysis of the substance use and mental health outcomes of family-based treatment for substance-abusing youth.

Charles was a highly esteemed research methodologist, and he collaborated with many ORIers over the years, such as Holly Waldron, Hy Hops, Tim Ozechowski, Mike Robbins, Janet Brody, Erica Finstad, Paul Rohde, and Sue Duncan. He leaves an important legacy of the impact that his research and data analytic expertise had on treatments to help struggling youth and their families, including over 55 published papers.

Charles loved ORI and was always willing to help his colleagues with positive and supportive feedback, he participated actively in the governance of ORI, and he stayed strongly connected with ORI despite the geographic distance between Eugene and his home in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Charles mentored many scientists and data analysts over the course of decades and had a profound influence on their careers. ORI's deepest sympathies extend to Charles' family, friends, and colleagues for this very sad loss.
