Health literacy is defined as the ability to locate, understand, and use health related information and services to navigate, manage, and advocate for ones’ health and well-being. Health literacy has been directly linked to a myriad of short and long-term social, emotional, physical, financial, and educational outcomes.
Good health and wellness (i.e., physical, social, emotional) are related to positive educational outcomes and facilitate successful living. Poor health and well-being are linked to limited health literacy and have serious consequences in terms of medical care quality, costs, and disparities nationwide as shown in studies evaluating the economic impact of low health literacy.
