Charles W. Turner, Ph.D. – In Memorium
Charles W. Turner, Ph.D., Senior Scientist
Senior Scientist Charles W. Turner, Ph.D., passed away in August 2020. Charles was a highly valued, highly regarded, and beloved member of the ORI family, and he is deeply missed. Charles joined ORI in 2002 after retiring from the faculty of the University of Utah (1970-2003), and was an ORI Scientist for 18 years. At ORI Charles served as principal investigator or co-investigator on nine different research grants on the treatment and prevention of substance abuse and other serious problem behaviors in adolescents and young adults, with particular focus on analysis of the substance use and mental health outcomes of family-based treatment for substance-abusing youth.
Charles was a highly esteemed research methodologist, and he collaborated with many ORI scientists over the years. He leaves an important legacy of the impact that his research and data analytic expertise had on treatments to help struggling youth and their families, including more than 55 published papers.
Charles was always willing to help his colleagues with positive and supportive feedback. He participated actively in the governance of ORI, and he stayed strongly connected with ORI despite the geographic distance between Eugene and his home in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Charles mentored many scientists and data analysts over the course of decades and had a profound influence on their careers.
